Molybdate

What it is

Wulfenite is the star of this group — thin, square, translucent crystals in vivid orange-yellow. A lead molybdate mineral, wulfenite is one of the most photogenic minerals in any collection.

How it forms

Forms in the oxidation zone of lead-molybdenum ore deposits. The thin tabular crystals grow in open cavities where solutions can flow freely.
