Feldspar
What it is
The most common mineral group in Earth's crust, making up about 60% of all rock. Feldspars are framework silicates containing aluminum plus potassium, sodium, or calcium. The interplay of these elements creates the shimmer of moonstone and the flash of labradorite.
How it forms
Crystallizes from cooling magma in igneous rocks like granite and basalt. The spectacular optical effects — labradorescence, adularescence — come from internal layering that forms as two feldspar compositions slowly separate during cooling.
